It has been more than ten years since the last Toy Story movie, a follow up to the original movie that had the distinction of being the first entirely computer-animated feature-length film. Though the last chapter of most Hollywood trilogies is notorious for being the worse, this one from one of my favorite animated movie franchise surely exceeded all of my expectations and lived up to the hype leading up to its showing. The movie will not be shown in movie theaters here in Korea until August 5 which is a little late as it already premiered in most other countries as early as the second week of June. After reading several positive reviews of the film from my friends back at my home country through their Facebook posts, I grew envious and finally decided not to wait until August to watch the film. A telesynched version was enough for me to conclude that it was the perfect ending to a great series.

Toy Story started out in 1995 when I was just 7 years old. It instantly became one of my favorite films mainly because, like most children, I loved toys. The idea of moving and talking toys fascinated me like no other films before. Just like Andy, the owner of the toys in the movie, I often made my imagination come to life by playing with my toys when I was much younger. I escaped reality and created a world of my own. And just like Andy, I grew up and this was the basic premise of the movie. As one grows up and leaves childhood behind, what happens to the toys you had and dearly cared about before? Would you just throw them away or maybe give them to other children? This was the challenge that Woody and the other toys had to face in the movie.

Andy was off to college and the toys were thought to be forgotten and were moved to a daycare center. There, the toys started their adventure of living a new life, trying to survive and deciding whether they should go back to Andy. Instinctively, the movie suggests that even if we grow up and move on, we can most likely find our inner-kid within us.

Overall, Pixar did a great job in rekindling Toy Story. While new characters were introduced, the main characters were commendably kept the same as in the previous films in most aspects that it can make you feel that you were in the past, when you were once a kid. It can make you laugh and then switchover to a tear-jerking moment within a minute. This film is definitely worth watching, with several meaningful life lessons, conveying them with the right touch of class and humor. In fact, I still plan to watch the movie again in the big screen as soon as it will be shown here. Indeed, the story of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang grew and touched my heart as well other kids’ and kid-at-heart adults’. Surely, this epic film series will be remembered to infinity and beyond.
